For more than 12 years, Monteath & Powys have been the dedicated surveyors and data managers for the University of Newcastle. Throughout this period, we have played a critical role in guiding the University through a digital transformation for their assets and facilities management, using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.
CONTEXT
The University of Newcastle has a global presence with seven campuses worldwide. With asset management operations based out of their Newcastle campus, it’s crucial that staff have remote access to the data for their global campuses.
Leveraging our extensive data capture across campuses and expertise in spatial systems, we were well-equipped to utilise captured data to establish an asset database to inform asset management operations and project management at the University.
SOLUTION
We developed an enterprise spatial strategy, leveraging ESRI technology to deploy desktop and mobile platforms. Hosted in the cloud, these platforms offer fast viewing, editing, and data capture capabilities, with swift access from any location, at any time.
By combining detailed survey data including utilities, services, structures, roads, topography, and cadastral boundaries with high-resolution aerial imagery and individual project information, we delivered a user-centric platform focused on the accessibility of technical data to non-technical staff. This platform enables University staff and contractors to access a large database of asset, facilities, and planning information, empowering them to make well-informed decisions for the future of the University.
In addition, we transformed traditional 2D survey data to 3D models, enhancing the visual representation of assets and facilities. We combined digital surface models, building information models, and 3D underground services, while maintaining their survey-grade accuracy. By combining traditional survey data with 3D modelling techniques, our improved visual representation of University assets and facilities helps facilitate a better understanding of spatial relationships and potential project impacts.
OUTCOME
Our services have become critical to the operation of the University, with our platforms being leveraged by both University staff and contractors to facilitate the strategic planning and project delivery across campuses from their Newcastle offices.
Furthermore, our platform has served as the single source of truth in conducting a comprehensive audit of underground assets to comply with the standards set by the Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association.
As part of this project, we integrated databases from the University’s asset management systems with GIS to ensure data is consistent and up to date across all systems.
We deliver the highest quality outcomes to our clients with our specialised surveying, town planning, laser scanning and project management services, produced by an industry-leading team.
