In 2025, Monteath & Powys expanded its in-house capabilities with the integration of the Utility Scan team, strengthening our position as a leader in Subsurface Utility Investigation (SUI) across New South Wales.  This strategic move has enabled us to offer a full spectrum of utility location and digital asset capture services, all aligned with the AS5488 Australian Standard.

One of our recent projects saw us engaged by Maitland City Council to undertake SUI across eleven key locations within the Local Government Area. The scope included not only utility detection but also the establishment of survey control and comprehensive digital asset recording.

Survey Control to ICSM Standards
Our team established high-precision survey control using the Australian Survey Control Network, with steel pins installed at 100m intervals.  All control points were traversed and levelled in accordance with ICSM standards, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all sites.

Advanced Utility Location Techniques
Utility detection was carried out using a combination of:

• Electromagnetic Detection
• Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
• Non-Destructive Digging (NDD)

These methods allowed us to locate and verify underground assets with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

Comprehensive Data Capture
Each identified asset was surveyed and attributed with detailed metadata including:

• Service type
• Material
• Depth
• Additional relevant characteristics

This level of detail ensures that stakeholders have a clear and accurate understanding of the subsurface environment, supporting future planning and infrastructure development.
