The Research Support Program (RSP) has provided targeted funding to improve the condition and functionality of key laboratories within the Health Science Precinct at the University of Newcastle. This project focuses on the refurbishment of PC2 laboratories LS229 and LS225 in the Life Sciences Building, ensuring these specialist facilities continue to support critical research activities.

The scope of works encompasses a comprehensive suite of upgrades designed to modernise the laboratories and enhance operational performance. Key activities include demolition of the existing moulded ceiling, internal painting, and the supply and installation of new energy-efficient lighting. Hydraulic services have been reconfigured to suit updated laboratory layouts, while new HVAC units have been installed to meet PC2 compliance and environmental control requirements.

The project also involves the delivery and installation of new laboratory furniture, relocation of existing fume cupboards, and the creation of an additional dedicated tissue culture room. Together, these works provide improved functionality, safety and flexibility for ongoing and future research programs within the Health Science Precinct.

Delivered under a Construction Management model, the procurement strategy involved inviting competitive bids from Principal Contractors. Monteath & Powys (M&P) was engaged to provide end-to-end project management services, including Contractor Procurement, Stakeholder Management and Contract Management. M&P also managed the procurement of specialist equipment and consultants required to support delivery.

Budgeting formed a critical component of the project, with M&P responsible for detailed cost planning and financial control to optimise value for the University. Through robust Project Programming and Tracking, progress was carefully monitored against agreed milestones. Regular Progress Reporting ensured stakeholders remained informed and able to make timely, well-considered decisions throughout the project lifecycle.

At M&P, we deliver structured, reliable project management solutions that support complex research environments. This project reflects our commitment to enabling high-quality outcomes that contribute to the advancement of health and life sciences research.
