The Advanced Prototyping Facility (APF) extends the Architecture and Built Environment Workshop, delivering a purpose built space for high end, cross disciplinary experimentation and innovation.  Designed to support advanced making, digital fabrication and applied research, the facility brings together a range of 3D printing technologies and specialist prototyping equipment, enabling students and researchers to move seamlessly from concept to creation.

Monteath & Powys (M&P) was engaged to provide comprehensive project management services across the planning, design and delivery of the APF.  From early design consultation and oversight, M&P worked closely with the client and consultant team to coordinate technical requirements, manage interfaces and ensure the design responded to functional, operational and safety needs.

Program and schedule coordination were critical, particularly given the facility’s location near the NIER precinct and the proposed Skills Hub.  Proactive planning and sequencing enabled the team to manage complex constraints, including high voltage infrastructure redirection, while maintaining programme certainty and budget control.  Robust risk mitigation strategies and disruption management ensured works progressed safely with minimal impact on surrounding operations.

M&P led budget management and procurement for specialist equipment, consultants and contractors, applying disciplined cost control and transparent reporting throughout delivery.  Stakeholder engagement and consultation remained central, with regular progress reporting ensuring clear communication, informed decision making and alignment with project objectives.

During construction, M&P provided site superintendent services, contract administration and contractor coordination, maintaining quality, safety and performance standards.  As the project moved toward completion, M&P managed commissioning, handover and work as executed documentation, ensuring the facility was fully operational and ready for immediate use.

The completed Advanced Prototyping Facility consolidates resources, improves operational efficiency and strengthens the University’s capability to support innovation, research and hands on learning.  The project reflects M&P’s expertise in managing technically complex facilities and delivering high quality outcomes through structured, collaborative project management.
